Nothing Beats Real Milk!

For Real Nutrition

We drink it in our cereal, put in our coffee, our oatmeal, and we bake and cook with it. It's the one thing we don't let ourselves run out of. It's milk and selecting it, like all other food choices today, is steeped in confusion.

In the 50's there was one choice, MILK, that was it. Buy it or don't, and everyone did. Today we have allergies, lactose intolerance, excess phlegm, ideologies, and politics - all of which surround the purchase of this seemingly simple food staple.

I get lots of questions about which ones to buy. So here's the low downon leche:
Soy Milk

Soy is like your embarrassing, inbred cousin from the South. We want to like it, but it's just too disfigured and scary. Even in the best case when it's organic and not genetically modified (non GMO); in order to get milk from a soy bean, it has to undergo creepy processing at such high temperatures as to render it indigestible at best. Sorry soy, we know you're family, but still.
Oat Milk

Oat milk sounds nice enough but, oops, sorry, it's packin' gellan gum. A study done on rats where gellan gum was supplemented as 5% of their diet for 4 weeks resulted in abnormalities in intestinal microvilli. Darn intestine damaging gums! Oat milk is not your best bet anyway since it's made of oats which are high in omega-6s.
Coconut Milk

We all love and cherish coconut products and you would THINK coconut milk would be a good choice, if it weren't for the fact that they can't keep carageenan and guar gum out of it. Cane sugar's in there too, at least in the So Delicious brand. There's one brand of canned coconut milk, though, that I found recently without gums by Natural Value. You've got to give it a good mixing but it tastes great.
Rice Milk

White rice is extremely low in omega-6 fatty acids and is therefore an 'Ela Approved' food but I have yet to see a store bought brand without carageenan, xanthan or guar gum. BEWARE: Canola oil, an evil polyunsaturated devil of an oil, loves to hide out in rice milk. And no, organic doesn't make canola oil any less evil. Instead of store bought rice milk, make your own.
Nut Milks

Since omega-6s are a major contributor to obesity and degenerative disease, consuming milks made from nuts or seeds is not ideal. Check out why you should eat a diet low in omega-6s. Store bought nut milks are also full of ingredients harmful to your gut and your intestines like carageenan, xanthan and guar gum; all of which cause inflammation and can contribute to leaky gut syndrome. Get a nut milk bag and make your own if you still insist nut milks are the bomb. At least you'll avoid pesky ingredients when it's homemade.

Fun fact: Carageenan is actually used by scientists to cause inflammatory colitis (holes and inflammation in the intensities) in lab rats. Hmmm...
Whole Milk (and milk products)

Organic, whole milk is full of healthy, pro-metabolism, anti-aging proteins. Milk is a rich source of vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium—all of which promote optimal thyroid performance. Whole milk, preferably raw (which is becoming increasingly available), is the superior choice for the nourishment of your family and will go a long way towards you looking foxy into your 50's and beyond.

Think you have milk allergies? Have you tried raw milk to see if it has the same allergy producing effect as regular milk? What about goat's milk? Goat's milk is known as being very gentle on the stomach and is recommended for babies who don't take well to conventional formulas. Always question the source of your dairy before ruling out this very important food group.

Just like wild caught seafood or grass fed meat, whole milk products like yogurts and cheeses are animal proteins which form an integral part of a micronutrient rich, metabolism boosting meal.

So stop feeling guilty and get your milk mustache on! Just remember to consume dairy in moderation depending on your level of leanness and amount of high intensity exercise that you do.
