Get Your Blood Pressure Down
A long history of research shows that
experiences in nature are linked to
many positive outcomes. Studies show
improved physical, mental, and social
well-being when individuals engage with
nature. This correlation has become a
prominent issue in city planning—especially
in high-density cities, where land
costs are prohibitive. Researchers from
the University of Queensland in Australia
were interested in how the frequency
and duration of exposure to nature was
related to long-term health outcomes.
One hypothesis was that higher levels of
vegetation would lead to higher positive
health outcomes.
Get Your Blood Pressure Down—Get Outside!
Results indicated that the longer
folks were in nature, the lower their
depression and blood pressure
and the more they moved. Being
in green space also increased
social cohesion. The most positive
results were shown for individuals
who spent 30 minutes or more
visiting a green space.
The researchers recognize
that their survey methodology
has implications for determining
causes. Nonetheless, it might be
nice to get out of the office and
go to your urban park!
