There’s a lot of talk about the important of improving health and longevity by controlling the rate at which our telomeres (the caps at the ends of your chromosomes) shorten. The longer they are the better your health….at least this is the theory.
Omega 3s have been shown to preserve the length of telomeres in our white blood cells.
This is important because the strength of our immune system dictates how hard we can train and push ourselves. If we are always coming down with something, our results will have to take a back seat to recovery.
Because telomere understanding is still being perfected, for those of us who are not convinced by omega 3s ability to improve our health and fitness in this manner, we should be aware that there is a strong consensus for the ability of omega 3s to improve the permeability of our cell membranes.
This means:
- It’s easier for nutrients like amino acids, vitamins, minerals and oxygen to get in, and toxins, waste and C02 to get out.
- The more efficient we are with this, the faster we can create a strong environment for detoxification, fat burning, improved sugar management and better cardiac function.
Don’t go crazy however. Large doses are ok for a while, but as you start to improve your health and get your omega 3s from natural sources like salmon, grass fed beef and bison, you can lower your supplemental intake. You have to be consistent though and make sure your body fat is dropping!
Its not uncommon for severely overweight individuals to begin supplementing with 10-20 grams of fish oil/day! However, if you have ANY underlying health issues, make sure to consult your primary care practitioner first!
Lastly, remember that it’s not only about getting in more omega 3s, it’s about getting the omega 6s out, so that there is balance. Omega 6, often called “bad" are not “bad" they are simply in abundance in today’s society. So lets create balance!
