Importance of Aerobic Exercise

Staying active with aerobic exercise is essential to our overall health.Aerobic exercises are an important part of keeping your blood pressure normal and can even lower high blood pressure. Any regular exercise or workout regimen should include aerobic – defined as any extended activity that makes you breathe hard while using the large muscle groups at a regular, even pace. Aerobic exercise will ultimately help make your heart stronger and more efficient.

In early human history, it was rare to die of diabetes or heart disease. Humans seem to be built more for activity than non-activity. However, with the advent of civilization and technology, humans find themselves in an increasingly sedentary situation. Aerobic exercise improves the efficiency of the heart, lungs and blood vessels as well as the efficiency of the metabolic enzymes that regulate the conversion of stored energy in muscle cells.
What are some examples of basic aerobic exercises?

It is important to start aerobic exercise at a low intensity and increase this over time as the activities feel easier. At the start of your program, 20 minutes of walking or jogging may leave you breathless and fairly tired, but as the weeks go by, you will likely need to increase the pace or distance. It’s important to remember you don’t just have to walk or jog. Other fun aerobic exercises include roller skating, swimming, biking, dancing, rowing, or skiing, – any activity that gets your heart rate increased, steadily. Additionally, there are everyday aerobic activities you can focus on such as playing actively with your kids, gardening and yard work, walking up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, and taking a walk after dinner. There are also thousands of exercise videos on YouTube that you can follow along with in the comfort of your own home.

You can derive benefits from aerobic exercise at any age. Exercise appears to be increasingly important the older we get. Many of the problems commonly associated with aging – increased body fat, decreased muscular strength and flexibility, loss of bone mass, lower metabolism, and slower reaction times – are often signs of inactivity that can be minimized or even prevented by exercise. Aerobic exercise is an important type of exercise and should be a part of your overall fitness plan.
