Too much salt stimulates the hunger hormones and may be adding to your weight?
Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated a clear relationship between salt intake and obesity. In this study of thirty-eight non-obese subjects (aged 25 to 50 years) a high-salt intake significantly increased fasting ghrelin (hunger hormone) levels, which were higher during the high-salt diet than during the low-salt diet. In support of this a positive correlation was also found between 24-h urinary sodium excretion and fasting ghrelin levels was demonstrated. This research shows that a high-salt diet elevates fasting ghrelin in healthy human subjects, which may be a novel underlying mechanism of obesity.
