For
some people, cardiovascular health is a bit theoretical in nature. In
the gym it might have connotations with endurance and stamina. At the
doctor's office it has to do with disease risk factors and is affected
by diet and lifestyle, as well as exercise. In reality, cardiovascular
health is about all these things. Diet and exercise are two of the most
important ways in which you can care for your heart's health. With
exercise, aerobic (requiring oxygen) exercise is the most helpful way to
keep your ticker healthy. Aerobic exercise improves circulation,
increases HDL cholesterol (the good kind), boosts metabolism, improves
respiratory function, and lowers risk of diabetes and cardiovascular
disease.
Getting
30 minutes of cardio most days of the week is ideal, but those who are
starting from "couch potato" will need to work their way up to that.
Using a treadmill, stationary bike or elliptical, make sure that you are
achieving your target heart-rate for best results.
