It’s…NOT! All About Willpower

“It’s simple to lose weight; It’s all about willpower!” Has anyone ever said that to you? Well, I am here to tell you that it is NOT all about willpower. It’s about much more than willpower and it is anything but simple.

The difficulties we face when trying to lose weight are emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical and very efca58ae9bf3780c7491fd0f23e9ffb9individual . We are all hard-wired differently. In other words, my stressors are differ from your stressors. My emotional/intellectual/physical reactions are different from yours. Each person reacts in their own unique ways to stimuli they are confronted with.

So when someone says why don’t you just get some willpower, they are missing the unique factors that make you you and are trying to fit you into a cookie cutter mold that assumes we are all the same. Believing in this cookie cutter approach can be very self-destructive. If you repeatedly tell yourself you should behave in a certain way, a way that you are not hard-wired for, you will constantly be disappointed in yourself.

The key to successful weight-loss is understanding who you are, how your mind reacts to different situations in life, and what behaviors result from your unique reactions. Once you are self-aware, you can successfully make positive behavioral changes and lifestyle changes. Becoming self-aware or mindful, does not happen overnight. It takes time, patience, and practice.

So, the next time someone says to you, “It’s simple to lose weight; It’s all about willpower!”, don’t let it upset you or make you think you are not strong enough. Just smile and remember, you are more in-tune with yourself than the person trying to tell you that you have a problem. Continue being patient and practice, practice, practice.
