How Best To Start A Swimming Routine

If you want to either swim competitively or improve your strength and endurance you need to undertake a routine to get yourself in shape so you can get back into the swim of things. If you're not sure where or how to start, we offer these tips:
Set goals for yourself: Begin with small, achievable steps to help you meet your goals. Whether you're looking to swim a marathon or simply be able to do 20 laps without gasping for air, set up some baby steps. Your goals will be determined by your ultimate accomplishment - ability to race, alternatives to a workout routine, better health. Set your goals and work to meet them daily.
Find a workout partner: If you are truly looking for motivation, look for a swim partner. If you're looking to swim competitively, having a swimming partner will motivate and challenge you. If you're looking to swim for health, having a fitness buddy will help pass the time.
If there's no one with which to swim, find a public pool: Going to a public pool can help you stay focused on goals. Get your workout gear packed and ready to go and stop by after work. Chances are you could find a swim partner at a public pool or even find a team to join.
How often will you train: To get the most from your workout, you should plan for at least three swim times a week and opt for 30-60 minutes each time. If you can swing it, try to work out in the swimming pool every other day. Start slow, then build your endurance.
Have the right equipment: Swim goggles are always good to keep the chlorine out of your eyes. You will also want a comfortable swim suit - while you might look stunning in a Speedo or a teeny bikini, it's best to swim in a suit that specifically made for swim workouts. Try on various styles until you find one that works best for you. You might want a kick board or a set of flippers or other items to help you with your work outs.
Ready, set, swim: Keep in mind that it takes 21 days to get yourself in a habit so there will be days when you probably won't want to do your swim workout but keep with it and you'll eventually come to look forward to it. Remember too, that once you've been exercising regularly you will not only look better, but feel better as well.
As with any workout routine, it's best to check with your doctor first to make certain you are healthy enough to begin one. Also, remember a swim workout is a low impact way to get in shape.
