Burning Calories Minefield

All these snacks are a big part of most people’s life – this is evidenced by the profitability of the companies that make confectionary and snacks.

Everything in moderation
As part of a balanced diet we can eat all of these snacks, as long as we are aware how calorific they are and how much effort we have to put into exercising in order to burn these snack calories.

You will notice that each snack is about 250 – 350 calories. So we will focus on this range when it comes to exercise.

How long would you have to walk to burn 300 calories?
Assuming you weigh the average weight of 150 lbs (70kg) you would have to walk 4 miles at an average walking pace of 3mph. This is the equivalent of walking for over 1 hour 15 minutes.

All these activities relate to this average weight, but you should note that someone who weighs more needs to exercise for less time. This is because it takes more energy to move a bigger body around, and so you burn the calories more quickly.

Running? If you run at 6mph for about 25 minutes you will have run enough to burn 300 calories. This is equivalent to running 2.5 miles and back.
How about cycling? If you get on your bike and cycle at 10 mph for 45 minutes (that’s 7.5 miles) you’ve burnt 300 calories. That’s the equivalent of cycling 3.25 miles and back.

...and spinning? If you are doing a Spinning class, you can burn 300 calories in a 30 minute session.

What about Step Aerobics? Using a 6-8 inch step you can burn 300 calories in 1 hour.

What about Zumba? You can burn 300 calories in a 45 minute Zumba class

Skipping? You have to skip for 20 minutes to burn off 300 calories.

Swimming laps at a moderate pace? To burn 300 calories, you should swim for 30 minutes. This assumes a moderate (not leisurely) pace.

Rowing machine (vigorous effort)? Working at a high resistance, going as hard as possible, you would still need to spend 30 minutes on the rowing machine to get rid of those mars bar calories!

No Quick Fix
There is no quick and easy way to burn calories. So next time you tuck into your 4th donut, ask yourself, “Am I ready to spend the next 2 hours in the gym?!”
